Plan wall paint for one or more matching rectangular rooms using metric dimensions. The calculator subtracts the total area of doors and windows, applies coats, coverage and waste, then estimates finish paint in liters and US gallons, the whole containers to buy, and the resulting material and labor costs. Optional primer and a quote allowance can be included when the job requires them.
Enter the number of matching rooms and their shared height, length and width in meters. The calculator uses those dimensions for every room, so calculate differently sized rooms separately. Add the total door and window areas in square meters, then enter the finish coats, coverage in square meters per liter, waste percentage and paint-container size.
For costing, enter the price per paint container and the labor rate per square meter per finish coat. Turn on primer when required and supply its coats, coverage, container size and price. The quote allowance creates a low-to-high range around the base estimate.
The starting assumptions are one 4 m by 3 m room with 2.5 m walls, 1.89 m² of doors, 2.88 m² of windows, two finish coats, coverage of 10 m²/L, 5% waste and a 5 L paint container. Paint and primer prices and the labor rate start at zero, while the quote allowance starts at ±10%. Primer is off by default; when enabled, its starting assumptions are one coat, coverage of 12 m²/L and a 5 L container. Replace these values with the measurements and product information for the job.
For matching rectangular rooms, gross wall area is calculated from the room perimeter, height and room count:
Gross wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height × room count
The combined door and window areas are then removed:
Net wall area = gross wall area − door area − window area
Finish-paint volume includes the selected number of coats, product coverage and waste allowance:
Finish liters = net wall area × finish coats ÷ coverage × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)
The US-gallon result uses finish liters ÷ 3.785411784. Whole paint containers are calculated by dividing the required liters by the container size and rounding up.
Primer follows the same area, coat, coverage, waste and whole-container logic when enabled. Material cost is the cost of the required paint containers plus the required primer containers. Labor is calculated as:
Labor cost = net wall area × finish coats × labor rate per m² per coat
The base estimate is materials plus labor. The low and high quote values apply the chosen allowance below and above that base.
With the starting values, gross wall area is 35 m². After subtracting 1.89 m² of doors and 2.88 m² of windows, net wall area is 30.23 m². Two coats at 10 m²/L with 5% waste require 6.35 L, or 1.68 US gallons. A 5 L container size rounds the purchase estimate up to two containers.
A second tested example uses two matching rooms measuring 5 m by 4 m with 3 m walls, 4 m² of doors and 6 m² of windows. With three coats, 8 m²/L coverage, 10% waste and 4 L paint containers, the result is 98.00 m² of net wall area and 40.43 L of paint, equivalent to 10.68 US gallons and 11 containers.
With primer enabled for one coat at 10 m²/L in 5 L containers, the same example requires 10.78 L and three primer containers. At $50 per paint container, $30 per primer container and $12 labor per m² per finish coat, materials are $640, labor is $3,528 and the base estimate is $4,168. A ±15% allowance produces a quote range of $3,542.80 to $4,793.20.
The waste setting can account for paint left in tools and containers, touch-ups, surface texture and application variation. Use an allowance that fits the job instead of treating one percentage as universal.

The calculator accepts 1 to 100 matching rooms and 1 to 10 finish coats. Room dimensions must be positive. Door and window areas cannot be negative, and their combined area must remain below gross wall area. Coverage must be greater than zero and less than or equal to 100 m²/L, container sizes must be positive, and paint prices and labor rates cannot be negative. The quote allowance can range from 0% to 50%.
When primer is enabled, it accepts 1 to 5 coats and requires positive coverage and container size plus a nonnegative container price. Invalid assumptions need to be corrected before the estimate can be used.
The material estimate uses whole purchasable containers, so its cost can exceed a simple price-per-liter calculation. Paint and primer are kept separate because their coverage, pack sizes and prices can differ.
Labor is based only on net wall area, finish coats and the entered rate per square meter per coat. It does not independently price preparation, masking, repairs, travel or access equipment unless those costs are incorporated into the rate. The low and high quote outputs are percentage allowances around the base estimate, not a guarantee of the final job price.
The calculator's dimensions and opening areas are metric inputs. The gallon figure is a converted output, not an alternative measurement-input mode.
